The Whitechapel Mission, has been helping Londoners to help the homeless since 1876, meeting the specific needs of each man and woman who walks through its doors.
It is a volunteer led work with very few staff, but this does not mean it is a small organization.
- As many as 300 people a day, looking for our assistance are seen.
- As many are seen, if not more, than the other day centres in London.
- This is done for a fraction of the cost of other day centres.
- This is done without any statutory funding
- This is done without spending a penny of donations on fundraising or administration.
- With the recognition the value of everybody coming through our doors.
First, it helps the homeless by meeting immediate needs: food, shelter, clothing, and medical care. In our recovery programs, addressing deeper needs for life-skills and job skills training, and addiction recovery. Progress is measured against four criteria, which indicate that a life has been transformed from homelessness to hope: connection to family, commitment to sobriety, a job and a place to live, and a plan for the future.
Today, The Whitechapel Mission is a results-oriented organization that is recognized as one of London's most effective. The Whitechapel Mission is called to serve the men and women caught in the cycles of poverty, hopelessness and dependencies of many kinds, and to see their lives transformed to hope, joy and lasting productivity and its goal to be the most effective provider of compassionate care and life transformation for hurting people in London.
Our involvement in addition to giving by the Church and individual members is to volunteer to be committed to be in the East End by 5.30 am on a fifth Saturday morning of any month where there are five saturdays with a team to cook breakfasts for whoever arrives (anything between 150 and 300), returning to Raunds (very tired) during the early afternoon. NOTE this activity has been suspended since Covid but we continue to support with our gifts & prayers
For more information please use the website link shown on our Links page and see the Church Calendar for the dates on which we are committed to attend.
