Visit to Methodist Church Art Collection

The Methodist Modern Art Collection is being exhibited in a number of venues in Leicester from 2nd May until 9th June at venues across the city in a joint project between the Anglican churches, including Leicester Cathedral and Bishop Street Methodist church.

The 55 works in the collection, of which over 40 will be on display, mostly depict scenes from the life and teaching of Christ, and are by world-class artists such as Graham Sutherland, Elisabeth Frink, William Roberts, Patrick Heron and Maggi Hambling.

This collection has toured the UK since its inception more than 50 years ago. Over 30,000 people saw the collection in 2018 alone.  After this exhibition the collection is being removed from public display for several months to undergo major rejuvenation work.

A walking ‘bus tour’ has been booked by the circuit on the 18th May 2019 starting at 10am and will cover the 4 city centre venues.  This tour will be at a comfortable pace (it is suitable for scooters, but not ideal for framed walkers) and will give us time to stay with the artwork at each of the venues, together with guided information about the venue and each piece of artwork on display.

We hope to finish at 1pm at Bishop Street where you can purchase lunch at the Bishop Street Chapel Café (it is advisable to pre order food).  Afterwards you may wish to explore the city centre or visit the Richard III visitor centre

If you are interested in coming please could you contact Rev Kim Shorley on 01933 622137, or rev@theshorleys.co.uk, so that transport can be co-ordinated and lifts offered where possible as parking is an issue, but a number of pay and display car parks are located nearby.
